Irish Soda Bread

This authentic Irish Soda Bread is the perfect bread to accompany your St. Patricks Day meal.  It is super easy to make, there is no yeast, no waiting for it to raise, no waiting at all.  You just mix it up, give it a little kneading, and it is ready to throw in the oven and bake.  Irish Soda Bread is traditionally made with caraway seed, which I love.  It gives the bread a unique flavor and bite to it.  But if you aren’t a fan of the caraway flavor you can easily leave it out.

I have actually been eating a warm slice of it with butter and honey while I have been writing this post and it is heavenly.
Our Irish Soda Bread pairs great if you are making corned beef and cabbage, and is especially good with our Irish Beef Stew HERE.  And if you are really in an Irish mood you could also make up our yummy Shamrock Shakes HERE for dessert.

Ingredients (with Amazon Links)

  • 4 c. flour
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. caraway seed chopped
  • 1/3 c. butter
  • 1/3 c. sour cream
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1 1/4 c. buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 375 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and caraway seed.
  3. Cut in the butter using a pastry blender or whisk until thoroughly combined.
  4. Mix in the egg, sour cream, and buttermilk until you have a sticky dough.
  5. Pour the dough out onto a floured surface and knead until soft, adding more flour as needed.
  6. Place dough into a 9 inch round pan (I just used a glass pie pan) and cut a deep x in the center.
  7. Bake at 375 for about 40 minutes or until a nice golden brown. Brush with a little melted butter. Cool at room temperature.
